Responsible Design

Sustainable Design

Through an integrative design process, KG+D strives to create architecture that is environmentally responsible, adaptable, and enduring in all our projects. In collaboration with our clients, we balance sustainability, constructability, and budget, to create meaningful designs unique to each project.

A few of our most notable sustainable projects include:

The Media Arts Lab at Jacob Burns Film Center received LEED Gold in 2010 and promotes a well-rounded approach to sustainability achieving credits balanced across all five LEED categories. The building is outperforming its energy model at 50% more energy efficient than baseline.

The replacement Post Road Elementary School for the White Plains Public Schools was designed to meet the criteria for LEED for Schools at the Gold Level and has been touted by NYSERDA as the “Greenest School in New York State.” In 2010 this new building earned an Energy Star rating of 100.

The H.H. Wells Middle School addition in the Brewster Central School District is designed to achieve NYS CHPS certification. This addition to the existing middle school provides classrooms flooded with controlled, natural light with fresh air modulated to achieve good indoor air quality without wasting energy due to its energy recovery systems.

Middletown High School completed a major addition project that included the development of a central innovation lab. The innovation lab was fit into an underused interior courtyard space and adjacent spaces are renovated into innovative learning spaces. The interior additions brings natural light into the space through clerestory windows and features a green roof.

New Hutchinson Elementary School was recently completed and designed to a LEED Silver equivalent. Features include high efficiency HVAC equipment, energy recovery ventilation, LED lighting, daylighting and a high-performance building envelope.

Social Responsibility

KG+D is committed to social reasonability, and we believe that active participation within the communities in which we work and serve is a core component to building better communities. As such, our firm’s participation includes a wide range of activities including financial donations, volunteering to serve in professional associations and not for profit organization and pro bono projects for community-based organizations.

Diversity, Equity + Inclusion

KG+D believes that justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) are instrumental not only to the success of our firm, but also to the success of all our projects. Our firm culture and the award-winning designs we create for our clients benefit from the variety of voices and perspectives within our office and from our broad team of consultants. We do not discriminate in our internal hiring practices nor in the selection of partners with whom who choose to work.

Equal Employment Opportunity Statement

It is the policy of KG+D to provide equal employment opportunity to all people without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, or veteran status. Therefore, all matters relating to recruiting, hiring, training, compensation, promotions and transfers, requests for leave, benefits, educational, social, and recreational programs, and all other terms and conditions of employment are free of discriminatory practices.

Decisions about employment opportunities are made in a manner to ensure that qualified minorities, females, individuals with disabilities, special disabled veterans, veterans of the Vietnam Era, and any other protected categories found in the law continue to receive equal consideration.

Inclusive Process

We endeavor to create a culture of mentorship to foster communication, build upon our technical expertise and capabilities, and strengthen relationships within the firm. KG+D promotes an environment where individuals can voice opinions and participate in conversations around issues that are important to them. Our “KG+Discussions” initiative provides an open forum where employees can discuss topics ranging from sustainability to social responsibility to design inspiration and helps provide direction in supporting causes that are important to our KG+D family. Design reviews are open to the entire firm for participation and engagement around our projects.

As architects, we realize that oftentimes the design process and project deliverables are not accessible or easily understood by those who are most affected by a project. Our inclusive process and open dialogue throughout the life of a project ensures that our clients and project stakeholders have a clear understanding and level of comfort at every step of the process. There is a reason that the first word of our firm tagline is “Listen”. We practice active listening with all our project stakeholders to understand their vision and create imaginative solutions for their design challenges. We build healthy, sustainable projects that embrace equity and celebrate the diversity within our communities and our region.
