The $22 million renovation and expansion of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich Clubhouse represents a transformational investment in youth and community. Originally built in 1939, the facility had not undergone a major upgrade in nearly two decades. The design goal was to modernize and expand the Clubhouse to meet the evolving needs of young people while honoring the architectural character of the original building.
The 66,000-square-foot project renovated all existing spaces and added a high school-size gymnasium over the parking lot, maximizing green space on the tight urban site.
A new main entry was introduced while retaining the historic front door, enhanced with a patio for outdoor activities. The secure entry sequence includes an elongated drop-off area and a vestibule, improving member safety and parent convenience. The lobby preserves the original brick exterior wall, linking past and present.

Locker rooms were upgraded, and the central stair and corridors were refreshed with the Club’s vibrant blue and orange accents. The former gymnatorium was transformed into a dynamic Teen Center with breakout rooms, tutoring spaces, and a College & Workforce Readiness Center. Its double-height space also allowed the team to expand the second floor footprint, doubling educational capacity with flexible classrooms, an art studio, and gallery-style learning areas for informal collaboration.
The Clubhouse Lounge serves as a central hub, connecting athletic spaces and offering flexible areas for socializing and learning. The new multipurpose gym includes a full basketball court for Club programs and rentals, while the former gym was converted into a flexible activity room. Outdoor improvements include a renovated turf field, secure fencing, and amphitheater-style seating for athletics, performances, and community events.
Architecturally, the expansion balances historic character with a forward-looking mission: red brick, stone bases, pitched roofs, and expansive glazing. Skylights bring light and transparency throughout. More than a renovation, this project reimagines a vital community institution, creating modern, flexible, and welcoming spaces where generations of Greenwich youth can thrive academically, athletically, and creatively in a safe, inspiring environment.
