The Wilton Family YMCA has been a community resource since 1972. Over its almost 50-year history, the needs of the community evolved, and the Y’s physical space required a thoughtful plan for renovation and expansion that would effectively reflect and accommodate that evolution and growth. The design team collaborated with the Wilton Family Y to help them reimagine their existing facility.
The design solution reconstructed the central core of the building creating an addition that unites the gym, pools, and fitness areas. The addition includes a renovated and expanded lobby and reception area, a second story health/wellness center that includes an expanded fitness center, new and renovated early childhood classrooms, a new pool bubble for the outdoor 50M pool, and new administrative spaces. The project also incorporated circulation, parking and drop off improvements.
The central reconstruction focused on the development of a new main lobby with a strong first impression and security control points. The large lobby is open, welcoming, and incorporates a significant increase in natural light and creates a clear connection to the adjacent activity spaces. The exterior entry incorporates a prominent canopy and a new drop-off zone with hard and soft landscape features and seating areas.
Improvements to the pool facilities and support spaces include modernized locker rooms for the 25-yard pool and the new fitness center and with large family changing areas and accessible space for seniors and people with special needs. The renovated existing 6,000sf fitness center includes four dedicated group exercise studios. The project also renovated and expanded the Norwalk Hospital Heath & Wellness Suite and the Kids Club room for babysitting services.
